European Starlings Downtown

5/25/2012

I noticed a pair of beautiful birds, dark and iridescent with a yellow beak, feeding in the park in downtown Santa Rosa. Out came my Samsung Galaxy Note with the iBird Pro app... in a matter of a minute or so I learned that these were European Starlings.

So...what did I observe? They were a pair. They stayed together most of the time. I couldn't see a difference between the two of them. They didn't wait for the lighted pedestrian sign to come on before they crossed the road. They didn't seem to like being photographed, but apparently enjoyed crossing the road when I lifted my camera and then watching smugly while I had to wait for the light before I could cross and approach them again. They pretty much ignored the sparrows. One acted dominant, sometimes chasing the other away from some tidbit of food.

"You do not have my permission to photograph me," said the Starling.
